Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks sit close to each other near Sigiriya, and both are known for large elephant gatherings around their central reservoirs. Deciding between them mostly comes down to the time of year you are visiting.
The elephant gathering
Minneriya is famous for what is often called "the Gathering" — large numbers of elephants converging on the receding reservoir edge during the dry season, roughly from July into early autumn. This is Minneriya at its most impressive, but it is also when the park is busiest with visiting jeeps.
When Kaudulla takes over
As the dry season progresses and water levels shift, elephant activity often moves toward Kaudulla, particularly later in the year. Kaudulla tends to be quieter with fewer jeeps, even when elephant numbers are strong, which suits visitors who want a calmer safari experience.
Outside the peak season
Both parks have resident elephant populations and are worth visiting year-round for general wildlife, including deer, water birds and occasionally leopards, even outside the peak gathering months.
